Image of the Burren, Ireland
The Burren

The Burren, in north-west County Clare, is internationally renowned for its unique limestone landscape, extraordinary flora, and rich archaeological heritage. Widely regarded as Ireland’s finest example of karst terrain, the region is characterised by vast limestone pavements, distinctive rock formations, underground rivers, caves, and intricate drainage systems that create a landscape unlike any other in the country.

The Burren is also home to an exceptional concentration of archaeological sites, including more than 70 wedge tombs—most famously Poulnabrone Dolmen — as well as ring forts, ancient field systems, hut circles, and historic castles such as Leamaneh Castle. Among its many natural attractions are the spectacular Aillwee Cave and Doolin Cave, both of which offer fascinating insights into the region’s geological history.

While the Burren can be explored by car along a network of scenic routes, the best way to appreciate its remarkable character is on foot. The old "green roads" of the Burren provide excellent opportunities for both short walks and longer hikes through this distinctive landscape.

Visitors are strongly encouraged to use one of the excellent Burren guidebooks available from local bookshops, as they help reveal many of the hidden features and stories of this remarkable landscape. Guided walking tours are also available throughout the region. A visit to the Burren Display Centre in Kilfenora is an ideal starting point, offering a fascinating introduction to the geology, history, archaeology, and natural wonders of this unique corner of Ireland.
